Inspiration,  Lyrics,  Writing

lyrics. lyrics lyrics lyrics.

i tell you, they are one of the biggest obstacles that i face. but i think honestly, i haven’t worked hard enough in this area. i do believe that there are very poetic people in this world, and sentence-forming is something that comes not just naturally but smoothly to them! it’s a bit unfair, but then again, we all have our strengths. and our weaknesses, and i think for me this is one of them! so i thought i’d do some thinking out loud, well, type as i think, and go over some lyrics of who i think really have the gift of the gab-in-song.

firstly would be brooke fraser. now if ever you need a menial task to sound romantic, ask brooke. these are the lyrics to her song ‘sailboats'(which is hardly menial, but a real love song) off her ablum FLAGS.

We’re adrift on a sailboat,
My love is the sea.
Yours is the horizon, constant and steady.

You set my limbs locked hard afloat,
Lifted my lonesome sail.

The tide is out, the moon is high,
We’re sailing.

Darling you love is healing,
It makes the bitter sweet.
Warms the winter to spring again, secures the cold’s defeat.
We’re cutting anchor, casting out,
In to the glorious deep.

The tide is out, the moon is high,
We’re sailing.

When we’ve succumb to decrepitude.
Still our love will remain in it’s youth.

The tide is out, the moon is high,
We’re sailing.We’re sailing. We’re sailing.

after reading through i’ve kind of thought to myself, the lyrics are not as striking as when they’re backed by her beautiful tone and tasteful melody. however there are a few things, that really, i just would not think to do. firstly i think my best friend could be a thesaurus. succumb isn’t a word i find in my daily vocabulary, and i actually had to look up what decrepitude meant. the way you form the line is just so crutial! for example when we’ve succumb to decrepitude. could also be said as, when we give in to feeling weak. mmm. i also don’t think it’s very often that we hear a really good metaphor in a song without it sounding way too cheesy. and let’s be honest, describing your love as an ocean has definitely been overdone, yet brooke brings a freshness to it and a real classiness so that you imagine yourself on a sailboat! i don’t know, perhaps my judgment would have been different had i not heard the song before really inspecting the lyrics?

i guess my main point in all of this, is just how much i need to develop my lyrics. it is possible to rhyme without sounding like dr seuss! often when i write, i find myself getting stuck in a bit of a rut! i just need one more line to finish the phrase, yet nothing is natural nothing is flowing so i make up some ridiculous cliche line that we have all heard a thousand times, and instead of revising the song a week later, (with a thesaurus!) i deem that song as no good. i’m going to stop that.

anyway, have a listen to this beautiful song here, and appreciate it as the whole package!

i’ll be back with another lyrical genius soon.

flower power

Makeup,  Photography

yesterday maddy and i did a bit of a spontaneous shoot.

i really wanted to get some beautiful head shots of her noodly (cute) face, and show off some pretty makeup looks. we both kind of adore flowers in head shots, so that was really the inspiration. the first lot of photos is that ‘au naturel’, a blossom within the blossoms type shot. not a lot of makeup, but polished and darn beautiful. the second is a bit more fun. it’s like the flowers painted her face a little. a bit of candy colours and beautiful pinks and purples. a rose amongst, well, the roses. i used one of my favourite stila lipsticks in that shot.

well enjoy these beautiful pics, and if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

also, maddy is wearing this beautiful dolce and gabanna blouse that we found in a second hand store in paris. totally appropriate i think. have a beautiful day – smell the roses, or something else pleasing to the nostrils.

Makeup,  Winter

hello people.

so i have just filmed a couple of makeup videos to show you all. i thought it would be a good way for me to express my makeup experience with you all without having to use too many words. because we all know i can get lost in my words. so the first of the series to come is a foundation routine for dry skin. this is my skin type, so i’ve tried many products and ways to do my makeup and this is just one of many ways i love to do my foundation. check out the video and i will describe everything that i have used below, and how much i love it. there are so many great products in the world, but these are the ones that i have tried and loved. this is also a great routine for winter when we are all feeling a bit tight! enjoy, and let me know if you have any makeup requests!

for a dry skin i think moisturiser before makeup is the most important thing! this is the foundation for your foundation. really clean your skin and use your favourite moisturiser allll over! whatever you do, don’t use oil free. i’ve use keihl’s ultra facial moisturiser. it’s a good texture, not too rich, but stays on the skin. also an eye cream/moisturiser/serum for extra hydration under the eyes is a great option.

a hydrating primer is also key to keeping your skin fresh! i am obsessed with the hourglass primer serum. it will keep you so hydrated throughout the day, and the best thing is when you put a little too much on your fingers, you can run the rest through the ends of your hair and even in to your cuticles! how adorable. the stila one step correct primer is also amazing for all skin types. one of my absolute fav’s. a bit of colour correction – counteracting redness and dull tones, and also keeps you balanced.

basically i try to avoid oil free foundations if i’m feel very dehydrated, however with all that beautiful skin prep and primer serum on, most non-drying foundations are going to look lovely over the top. stila illuminating bb cream is one of my favourite products! i’ve posted about it before, but it’s the easiest way to get a little bit of coverage and stay dewy, and it really stays! smashbox long wear hydrating foundation is a good option for a bit more coverage, and it’s definitely build-able, but it does set, so just make sure you keep working it until your happy – it’s not easy to move it once it’s set. lastly, ellis faas skin veil is an awesome option for full coverage that stays dewy. it’s really hard to get rid of the glow in this foundation, even with dry skin absorbing everything!

for me under eye concealer is the most important part because i’m obsessed with covering my bags! hourglass hidden concealer is awesome and creamy and really good coverage, but sometimes it’s a little bit dark for me even though it’s the lightest colour!! (stupid) then by terry touche veloutee is a bit expeno, but a really lovely product! hydrating and pretty coverage, but not quite enough for me so i love to mix it with things. and lastly bare minerals corrective concealer. totally affordable and one of their best products, with pretty full coverage and a really creamy consistency. only thing is if i’m parched under the eyes i’ll need to probably wear hourglass and put up with the slight depth of colour.

i tend to stay away from powder because i just don’t want to dry out. and if you’re quite dry, then your skin is going to naturally absorb any stickiness or moisture from the makeup products anyway. if you’re more normal-dry then you can get away with a light application of a translucent powder all over, or wherever you need. i used the chantecaille HD perfecting powder. it’s seriously so beautiful and leave no powdery trace on the skin, but again quite a pricey product but i have had mine for months and not even hit pan yet! there are a good few pharmacy brand versions that do nicely also.

i love to use cream products to highlight and contour, even cream blush. i feel like the more you can stay away from powder the better. i used nars multiple sticks in copacabana and south beach to create the highlight on the cheek bone and bronze along the cheeks. i think avoiding powder on your cheek bones ensures you have a super glowy finish, which i love!

and that’s that. don’t hesitate to ask anything!

Covers,  Writing

(random wedding shot)

so i’ve just launched a soundcloud for myself. not sure how much use it’s going to get at this stage, but the plan is to put many demos/previews of stuff that i am working on. currently the only thing on there is a cover i did with a couple of friends from waapa in hope that we would get a few pub gigs out of it. and we did. but i don’t think the pub life is for me anymore. i have had every intention to really work on my own stuff this year and develop some sort of style or sound that i can own. but i have not been committed enough, and definitely been too easily discouraged. i just have to realise that it may take some time for me to really produce something that i love. and speaking of producing, that’s another factor. i have a recording program i just don’t have anywhere to set up a midi keyboard and even make some sort of lame excuse for a track. so i just resort to my piano. and i don’t know, but i think there’s only so far you can take your songwriting sitting on the same old piano. i need to get a bit more active, and that is what i plan to do.

so i vow to you, readers of caboodle street, and those interested in my ‘studio’, that i will have some work for you. i will spend my spare time not playing candy crush (darn that stupid unintelligent game), or practicing my makeup with nowhere to go, or even watching pretty little liars. i will spend my time in some sort of strange den that i will create for myself, to really get in tha zone and pump out some sweet sounds. well they might not be sweet, but they will be sounds. that i can guarantee.

in the meantime, i will mostly be posting about how i’m going/struggling with writing lyrics and who is doing it right. for me they’re the biggest mountain to climb. also i’ll show you what sounds i’m loving, and probably many youtube links. so if you feel like hearing a pretty humble version of wonderwall (oasis), or you need a band for your pub, please click here and enjoy my soundcloud.
