so maddy and i had the privilege of seeing the amazing MEC MAC a couple of weekends ago. she was pretty darn amazing and i wanted to just share my experience, and also enlighten those of you not aware of her talent.
i knew meg back in my waapa days (wasn’t that long ago really), and actually saw/heard some of these songs developing. it was really cool to see how much the songs had changed – and all for the better. the melodies are all so smooth. like they’re unpredictable but they sound right – not over done. i really appreciate it when a singer knows when to hold out a long note, or cut it short, and then use trills and runs for a little extra colour rather than flipping their way through the whole song. musically i was pretty impressed with what was done with only a keys player, bass player, and drummer. there were lot’s of electronic sounds giving it a sort of pop and r’n’b blend, with meg’s soulful vocals over the top. i’d say the highlight for me was hearing them perform ‘grandma’s hands.’ it was literally flawless. everyone around me was completely in awe of her and the band, and all so thrilled to be there with her. it was a serious honour and i was proud! aaaanyway, just wanted to share my lil experience witchyall.
please check out her EP and buy it on itunes here, or visit her store here for the real life thing !!
so, you could say i’m excited…
kimbra and janelle monae, are touring australia and nz! this is approximately my dream duo. i could not think of two cuter, talented spunks to be playing together. if you have been reading the blog for a little while you would definitely know my love for kimbra. she is really one of my all time favourites and a massive inspiration for me. janelle is also a musical icon for me. what i love about them both is how they move away from the predictable conventions when it comes to pop music, and increase the soul! and lord knows we all need more soul! i think kimbra’s attention to detail in every single one of her songs, and her ability to manipulate her voice and layer sounds is highly impressive/beautiful to my ears/covetous! and janelle’s cutesy lyrics, merged with funky melody lines is greatly underdone in today’s popular music culture. both manage to really take aspects from the old and merge it with the new, and i applaud and adore them!
i went and saw kimbra when she played a couple of years ago, and wow, like wow, that performance really grew my appreciation for her talent even more. unfortunately it was at a night club so maddy couldn’t come! (insert painfully sad emoji – the one with the big sad mouth). but this time, she will be right with me! i know for her, janelle is played almost every day. so, tickets go on sale on the 14th, and we will be waiting! you can get tix here.
here is there little trailer for the tour…
see you all there!
hello from the music side of the world (blog)!
i just wanted to share with you guys a little something that has been happening with my new band ZOLA. a few months ago now, i was asked to join this groovy new christian band. it’s been such a good time getting to play music together and to work on the recording of ZOLA’s debut EP. i wanted to let you know where you can listen/purchase and enjoy some new music. this is the website:
it’s always interesting being a part of a new band. it’s funny how dynamics can change, and personalities and come through or be withdrawn. at the moment captain chris is at the forefront of writing the tunes, and we basically jam them out to a point we feel they could be recorded and played live. but it’s still so fresh and new for me (especially considering i have been away over a month! yikes!) and i am excited to let you know how our writing process is going and what new music we have coming up! anyway, enjoy and please let me know what you think!
so i’m obessessssed with kimbra’s album vows, and in particular her song ‘call me’. i had to share it with you all just so you can be as happy as i am when i listen to her. i dare to not bop your head as you listen. it’s impossible. i hope to be this cool one day. click here to experience happiness…
