distress yourself

DIY,  Life and Love

perhaps that caption is misleading.

distress your jeans yourself.

it’s something that i have done before in my life, but i just thought i would share how i do it. i know there are a million videos on youtube, but it’s actually very easy. time consuming yes, but not hard. and it always looks better after a few washes. i’ll show you the jeans again after i wash them and revise if they are torn enough where i want it. i think that distressed jeans are the easiest way to add a little “cool” to your daily life. not only will you receive cool in the form of breeze on your knees through the tears, but adding a plain singlet and nearly any possible pair of shoes, and you’re cool.

here’s me looking cool (or distressed). i’m pretty cool when i’m taking photos of myself, alone, in my house…

to get these results, keep following my little step-by-step…

2

1. put on the jeans and make marks in the areas you would like to cut out. i put a little line in-between the areas i wanted to cut out completely, so i could tell them apart from the areas i just wanted to cut, or pull away until the white was showing. it’s a good idea to have a look at some photos of distressed jeans that you like, and emulate where the tears are.

2. cut out the areas you put a T through, and make cuts along the other lines. you will rub against the edges of these rectangle looking cut-outs and fray them so they look a lot less perfect.

4

3. create two parallel cuts, so you can create that white stitching effect. it’s easy to start small and make it bigger by adding another lower cut if you feel you want this area larger.

5

4. then take a pin and pull out the white string running across. just try and pull each white strand down one at a time to avoid stretching them too much. use your fingers too! then the blue denim remaining in-between the two cuts, should easily be pulled straight up or down to expose the white strings. some people like to do this step with tweezers so you can grab the blue denim easily, but i just used my fingers. it should move away like show below…

5. where you have created larger holes, it can be nice to do this ‘string step’ just below it, so it looks less like a big rectangle cut from your jeans! you can see that in the pictures below. pretty much, continue this process until you’re happy with the amount of distressing you have given your jeans.

the jeans that i used are a stretchy denim, and this has definite pros and cons. the upside is that the ‘white strings’ are actually elastic, so they tend to not break by your knees pushing against it etc. whereas non-stretch jeans can very easily break to leave big open holes where your white is. (unless of course they are totally not fitted and you’re a small person that does not push against the jeans with your thighs/knees!) the down side to stretch vs non-stretch, is that i don’t think the stretch denim ever looks quite as good or as raw. but like i said, a few washes and these should look significantly cooler and more worn in!

hope that helped ya’ll.

all white (nearly) everything

singlet: Factorie
blouse: Scanlan and Theodore
jeans: Big W
shoes: Diavolina
watch: Marc Jacobs
lipstick: Red Square – NARS

the big w jeans make their second [bog] appearance. impressive for $10. they have served me well, unlike some others. remember my boyfriend-ish jeans from a couple of posts ago? well, they totally ripped like crazy to the point of no repair, and i had to return them. i was so disappointed because i so liked them, and i am now left with a light, distressed, nicely tapered, boyfriend jean shaped hole in my heart. so let the search recommence. i will keep you informed on my findings. back to this current post – it was definitely something a little different for me. i think my best intentions were totally there, but somehow the execution just wasn’t great. really to the point that i probably will never wear this ensemble again in this exact state. this could also be partly due to the state of my hair this day. it was pretty dirty. like, pretty dirty. but you do the best with what you can, and that was it.

to conclude, i don’t think it was a complete disaster, but definitely a good trial run. i think i was kind of going for that cool street style at Paris fashion week sort of thing (in my backyard) kind of like this or this. i know, it’s nothing like either. but at least i didn’t look like this. in saying this, i do quite like myself a bit of kim kardashian style, so for redemptions sake, a photo of kim doing all white beautifully. i’ll be back to revise this look at some stage. in the meantime, plenty of colour.

dressed to kill

Outfits,  Spring

bought this shirt in singapore and came home to soon realise that i was, in fact, on the trend money with givenchy’s line of t.shirts and jumpers displaying various vicious animal heads.

jacket: Topshop
t.shirt: some store on Haji Lane
shorts: Vintage
shoes: Converse
bag: Pigeonhole

i will assume given you’re on this site that you do enjoy the occasional fashion blog, and if you follow anyone like the blonde saladjak and jiltuula etc, you will notice quite a presence of givenchy’s rather confrontingly (not a real word) frightening prints, or kenzo’s colourful african take on the wild animal. or perhaps you’ve seen kanye or liv displaying their givenchy roar. well, i’m a fan of the trend. i sort of did it by accident, in which case i may at some stage actually delve a little deeper and get myself a shirt of the kind. but the truth is, until i start earning proper money i won’t be buying any proper clothing, and certainly not of the givenchy persuasion. but one day. yes. one day. i’m also attempting a trend that probably a year or so ago i would have confessed was a sin. double denim. but i actually sort of love it. i dono. maybe i didn’t nail it this time around, but i certainly tried. and i really need some new shoes. i mean how many times will i wear my converses. actually. probably forever. but i at least need another option. you see i was going shopping this day, and i am always stumped when it comes to footwear for shopping. it’s like you want to look good, but you also want to walk at a good enough pace and maintain balance. you know? so. first step. money. second step. shoes. i’d say life tends to run in somewhat of a similar order. perhaps add food and we have satisfaction.

for the love of charlie

Outfits,  Summer

so these photos were a little sporadic. you see. russell james this awesome celebrity photographer is having a little facebook photo competition. and the whole theme was love. and i guess maddy and i thought, well we love charlie (who doesn’t love that face), so we took a couple of snaps with me and the ball of fluff. i’m actually loving these photos too. the lighting and the discovery of the awesomeness of curves on photoshop i think has given some rather cute photos. so hopefully you like them too. this dress was $18. i know. really. from that lucky 13 place in the city that i have previous spoken about. mm. it was a long long time ago that i mentioned it. anyway. good store. only down fall is that everything is like ‘one-size-fits-all’. but it’s definitely a lie. from the front we are all happy and dandy, but when i turn around you start to question whether it is in fact a dress. then i lean ever so slightly forward and it really loses all credibility. so i may be in denial. i still think its a dress. i just add some little black denim short underneath. then there is then the issue of older women looking at you shocked for showing your black denim underwear. sweetheart. they’re shorts.

okay anyway it’s late and i could talk forever. follow me on instagram. it is pretty fun.
ciao bambinos.
